Sustainability reigns at Greenbuild International Conference & Expo

Buddy Platform was a first-time exhibitor at Greenbuild International Conference and Expo in Chicago last week. We packed up our Buddy gear in Seattle and descended on the windy city for a two-day event chock-full of opportunities for all interested in sustainability in the built environment.

Greenbuild is serious about sustainability. All the sessions were aimed at sharing sustainability stories and solutions. Most of the exhibitors showcased products that were somehow geared toward increasing sustainability. All participants were encouraged to engage in sustainable practices like downloading and using the mobile event app instead of the printed expo guide and re-using booth carpet. We were even asked that when drinking beer, to choose Illinois draft beer over cans or bottles. Rest assured, the Buddy team did our fair share in terms of modeling sustainable behavior (and drinking beer)!

We met with folks from building architecture, construction, engineering, and planning professionals and were able to explain all about how Buddy Ohm monitors buildings’ climate plus electricity, water and gas consumption in real time, collecting critical data, processing that data and providing actionable information.

We showcased a live demo that collected the electricity used by a LIFX LED light bulb and the electricity used by an incandescent bulb in real-time. It’s a pretty remarkable chart…

According to the most recent Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS), 17% of all electricity consumed in U.S. commercial buildings is for lighting, making it an area where improvements in energy efficiency are often sought. One relatively easy way to start saving is by replacing incandescent lighting with LEDs which have an extremely long life span. Incandescent lights by comparison last only 1-5% as long as LEDs. LEDs are also extremely energy efficient because they waste very little energy in form of heat. So, our live demo proved that Buddy Ohm can track the amount of electricity consumed at a sub-system level, offering information upon which to make efficiency decisions to reduce utility waste, make reporting easier and provide alerts for critical systems.

And once you have data about your building(s), Buddy Ohm offers an easy-to-read dashboard for your employees and customers to understand your energy and sustainability efforts so they too can modify their behavior and improve overall sustainability.
